Biotech Research Campus:
The Real Story
By Suzanne Bledsoe
Clyde Higgs, Vice President
of Biotech Recruiting with Castle and Cooke, joined us today to
share the emerging story of the Biotech Research Campus in
Kannapolis. What a story! The campus will include over 300,000
square feet of space devoted to state-of- the- art laboratories and
specialized equipment, over 1,000,000 square feet devoted to office
space for businesses engaged in biotech, 350,000 square feet of
retail space and approximately 500 single and multi-family
residential units.
This partnership of public and private resources will include a
first class complex of real estate and other resources that will
allow North Carolina to be at the forefront of fueling biotechnology
advances in the United States. Institutions that have already
committed their participation are Duke University, as manager of the
laboratory facilities, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill,
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and NC State. In
addition, the community colleges in the surrounding communities,
namely CPCC, Gaston Community College and Rowan/ Cabarras County
Community College have all jumped on board to provide specialized
training and education for prospective employees. On that front, it
is expected that, once completed, the campus and its inhabitants
will employ as many as 25,000 employees with various levels of
education and skillsets.
Clyde comes to his position with a lot of experience in building
biotechnology and was quickly recognized by Mr. Murdoch as a
valuable resource when he listed the four critical elements
necessary to attract biotechnology to the region:
- A facility that will
allow the researchers to be on campus
- Employee training
programs that are in place and up and running
- Appropriate
infrastructure, including lab space and specialized
equipment
- Early stage capital for
investment in emerging companies
|
All of these elements are present in the
proposed structure for the campus and its participants. Given that
and the commitment to the mission of the partnership by the parties
involved, this venture is bound to bring a new dimension of
entrepreneurial success to our region. How great is that?

Community Connections is
an international professional exchange program funded by the
U.S. Agency for International Development and implemented
through World Learning. The local hosting organization,
International House, would like to utilize RI's primary
objective of fostering international understanding and
goodwill, by extending an invitation to Rotarians to serve
as Home Hosts. A team of high level government officials and
influential religious leaders from the Kyrgyz Republic are
scheduled to arrive October 29-November 18. If you would
like to learn more about this program or volunteer to serve
as a host family, please contact Sarah Strange,
International House, 704-752-8309 or 704-942-7114. |
