GOLF WRAP-UP
September 11th was a great day for the Rotary Scholarship
Golf Classic, held at Cedarwood Country Club. 120 golfers
hit the course with the sun shining and the gentle breeze
blowing; 17 Rotarians hustled throughout the day to make
sure everything was as it should be; 24 Rotarians played in
the tournament; and another 22 attended the BBQ dinner and
after party.
John Lassiter and his
teammates, representing Police, Fire, and Sheriff, received
the 3rd place trophies; though Biff
Virkler was called away and didn't get to play -
his team came in 2nd; and the winning team was a group of
Firefighters - who also won the Interdepartmental Challenge
Trophy.
WBT Sports personality, Kricket Morton, challenged
participates to a closest to the pin contest.
Tom Robertson and
Joey Godbold let golfers
know that for a $20 donation, they could be photographed (by
Bert Voswinkel, of
course) with Kricket, then take their best shot.
Ed Turner was the
closest, closest to the pin. Matt
McQuide, Bob Webb, Ed Turner, and
Guy Wilson were winners
in the Putting contest.
The Bloody Mary Mobile, sponsored by
Martin Grable and the Community Blood Center
of the Carolinas, was a total hit and gave the beer cart -
driven by Herb Harriss
and company (Catherine, Meg,
and Sandy), some pretty
stiff competition.
Chip Scholz and
Jill "Vanna" Santuccio
handled the auction, as business manager
Paul Schmidt kept tabs
with who bought what. Chris Kemper
gave a good try, but it was Katie
Tyler who walked away with the top auction item,
a beautiful diamond and ruby ring donated by
Bill Stegelmeyer and the
Karot Patch.
Thanks to ALL that worked on the tournament, starting with
the leader Alan Adler;
who kept everyone straight and on task;
Paul Schmidt for keeping
up with the money; Sandy Osborne
for handling registration;
Catherine Browning and
Lynn Johnson for helping at the check-in table;
Martin Grable, who did a
great job of lining up the volunteers and keeping everyone
busy; Jim Adams for
getting the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches back from Huntersville in
36 minutes; Mary Ciminelli
for her tireless work getting the Ad journal put together;
Bill Bradley, who
secured the trophies - not once, but twice;
Luther Fincher for his
ability to bring in sponsors up to the very last minute -
and who's already got a couple signed up for next year;
Chris Kemper, just the
master coordinator of everything;
Joe Penner for getting the Medic van over to the
Rotary office to load up everything;
Bob and Robert
Freeman for providing fabulous grub;
Hershel Sanders who did
a phenomenal job with the banners and tee signs; everyone
that made a contribution through the Classification
Challenge; and Charlotte Rotary members in general! Time to
start working on next year's event. |
