The program was How I Got Where Im At and the Rotarians speaking were introduced by John Nicolay. Joel Walters led off. Joel is a native of Rockwell, NC, where he had a paper route and earned the Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from UNC and Wake Forest University Babcock School of Business. After four years with Arthur Anderson, now known as Accenture, he joined First Union National Bank in 1986. He is now in the merged Wachovia private bank and is responsible for wealth management services for major private customers of Wachovia in the Charlotte area. Ken Samuelson recalled sitting in the fraternity house after graduation without the slightest idea of what he was going to do and where he would be in 20 years. Now, thanks to Rotary, he has the opportunity to reflect upon where he is and how he got there. He recounted the role of his parents, four close college friends, and his brother-in-law for molding his future. He recalled having an experience that resulted in his committing his life to Jesus Christ and thereby finding his wife and fellow traveler, Ruth (daughter of Bob Culbertson) at a Campus Crusade for Christ gathering in Atlanta at the stroke of midnight, January 1, 1978. He and Ruth have four teenaged sons, two natural and two adopted, and Ken says that he is so happy that sometimes he envies himself. Steve Carter was born in Spartanburg, SC, where he too earned the Eagle Scout Award. He attended Georgia Tech and joined Texas Instruments in Fort Worth, where he worked on defense systems projects. He met wife Pauline, who was also an engineer at TI, when she left a note on his car inviting him to come over to her apartment and light her fire-in her new fireplace since he was an Eagle Scout really. No, really. He moved back to Spartanburg to the Total Quality Management Company and then to Charlotte in 1995, where he is senior vice president of human resources with Wachovia Bank. He and Pauline have a son and a daughter. Bill Blackwell is the vice president and general manager of the Charlotte Knights AAA baseball team. He is a native of Springfield, IL, where he earned a degree in radio and television from Southern Illinois University. After graduation, he broadcast games for the University of Illinois. He joined the St. Louis Cardinals farm club as a broadcaster and moved with the team to Louisville, KY. He served in management jobs with teams in Columbia, SC, Shelby, NC, Jacksonville, MS, and Greensboro, NC before coming to the Charlotte Knights.
Steve Carter, Bill Blackwell, Ken Samuelson and Joel Walters As usual, the How I Got Where Im At presentations made one of the most entertaining programs of the quarter. Visiting Rotarians and Guests - Tigger Alexander; Song - Richard Early; Invocation - Herb Harriss; Head Table - John Nicolay and Frank Timberlake. * * * DISTRICT GOVERNOR CHARLES C. DIXON, JR. The District Governor is the administrative officer of RI within each district, nominated by the district and elected at the International Convention. One of the responsibilities of the Governor is to make at least one official visit to each club within the first six months of the Rotary year (Charlotte Club visit is October 15th). Following the visit a report is filed about each club with RI concerning the visit and the status of the club. 100% attendance is encouraged as this allows club members an opportunity to learn about new RI information and programs. * * * |
