Group Study Exchange - Brazil 2010
By: George MacBain

The Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, applicants (one is a Rotarian and leads the team) participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families. For each team member, the Foundation provides the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

Today we met 6 Brazilians that have spent the last 23 days in NC cities (Concord, Shelby, Jefferson, Monroe, Statesville and Charlotte) and are heading home this weekend after attending the district conference in Wilmington. Patrick Gray is our GSE Club Chair and he was represented today by Bill Bradley.

This team has been led by Dr. Alexandra Estevao of Teresopolis, Brazil a Rotarian from District 4750 in the state of Rio De Janeiro where they have 49 clubs and 1,100 members. Each guest shared with us a brief Bio on themselves that I have summarized here:

  • Dr. Estevao is a 44 year old internal medicine physician, mother of 3 teenage boys and wife of an engineer. The family loves soccer and horseback riding together. Her city Teresopolis of about 150,000 people is very mountainous and famous for its many mountain peaks, in particular the Gods Finger Peak. Her Dad is a long time Rotarian and was an influence on Alexandra getting involved with Rotary in 2008. Her family hosted a Canandian girl as part of a Rotary exchange program for 1 year. Alexandra is slated to be President of her club in 2011/2012.
  • Danielle Moreira, 31, is from Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, a city of 200,000. Nova Friburgo is a textile town making up to 25% of the countries production. She is a chemical engineer and works for the local water supply and treatment business. She is married to Rene, a dentist and family is the most important thing to them. Danielle is member of a local Presbyterian Church and is a youth leader there. She was able to visit Charlotte Meck Utility Dept. today and has had a wonderful time in America.
  • Walace Souza, 28, is also from Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro with an MBA concentration in Marketing. He works as an administrator with the Rosier Textile Industry Ltd. Rosier is a manufacturer of elastic used in making underwear. He lives with his parents and brother and sister. He of course loves soccer, reading, and playing chess. He hopes to learn more about American culture and business models used in American business.
  • Marcella Sampaio, 27, also from Nova Friburgo has her law degree and manages her father's law practice…she is the Boss and is worried about who is taking care of things while she is gone!!! Marcella showed us pictures of her 3 dogs and again mentioned family is the most important thing in her life. She hopes to learn how the American law system works and how human resource issues are handled in the US. She really wanted to see a Bobcats game….
  • Maria Fernanda, 25, is a dentist practicing endodontics in Campos dos Goytacazes a large industrial city of 500,000. She loves her job, works at 6 clinics and has a passion for the special needs patients. She lives at home with her parents and best friend sister. She too calls her family the most important thing in her life. The Rotarian philosophy fascinated her and encouraged her to seek a way to make the world a better place. She hopes to make many friends on the GSE trip.
  • Lucas Lima, 26, from Mage, Brazil has a degree in International Relations and works for a Government Company that supports the Brazilian Navy. Lucas assists in project management of modernizing equipment and ships. He is single, loves all sports and wanted to see the Bobcats play also. He was exposed to Rotary at a young age as his Dad is a former Rotarian. Lucas has been to several Rotary conferences and currently is a District 4750 representative for Rotaract.
All of our guests did a wonderful job with their power point presentations, were easy to understand and have all had a life changing experience here in North Carolina GSE is just another example of the good that Rotary offers throughout the world sponsored by The Rotary Foundation.

Jim Haney has fallen in the last day or so and has broken his wrist. He also had to have an emergency root canal! Not a good day for Jim; Pender McElroy contributed to a story that law firms are getting back on track during the recession; David Norman provided his expert advice on when to look for a new accountant; Patrick Gray is one of the thousands grounded by the volcanic ash, although, he is in Paris.

Ten adult volunteers are needed for traffic control the evening of April 30 for the 5th Annual Waxhaw Town and Country Run. You will need to report for duty by 6pm. Contact Michael Litton, 980-721-8133 or Michael.litton@carolinapremierbank.com for additional details.

Committee Assignments are going well. 168 have submitted a response and more of you need to do the same. Review the website for a listing of how many have signed up for a particular committee. Some are heavy - some need lots more. For instance, we need at least 13 to sign up for Head Table. We have 0 for World Community Service. Assignments will be made if committees are not properly staffed. To sign up: click on committee assignments, review the committees; type in your name; make the selection from the drop down box; submit. New Rotarians - if you are totally stumped on where to sign up - go to the Greeters.

Roster Updates are needed by May 10th.
