Group Study Exchange - EGYPT
By Henry Bostic

The Group Study Exchange Team from Egypt paid a visit to Charlotte Rotary on April 7 and by all accounts was a real hit.

One of the highlights came at the very end in the all-too-brief question and answer session. "What has surprised you most about the United States?" Team member Radwa Ahmed Nawar responded, that "Americans know so little about Egypt." What better endorsement, then, of the need for such exchange programs.

Team Leader Salwa El Haddad, a practicing pathologist and professor of pathology at Ain shams University in Cairo, introduced herself and members of the team. She is Assistant Governor of Rotary District 2450, past president of Rotary Club of Cairo West and a Paul Harris Fellow. "We are happy to be among you," she said.

Other members of the team include:

  • Bahaa Mahamed Hallabo, a technical support engineer with Egyptian Automotive Co. (Volkswagen - Audi), sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alexandria;
  • Karim Salah Morsi, a business analyst with Platinum Partner, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cairo Wadi Degla;
  • Moataz Amr Abdel-Aziz, a dentist, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alexandria;
  • Radwa Ahmed Nawar, a corporate affairs and quality assurance officer with National Vegetables Oil Company, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan; and

GSE is an international exchange program for young professionals sponsored by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. It is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 in the initial years of their professional lives. Teams are composed of 4-6 non-Rotarian members a Rotarian leader.

The program provides travel grants for teams of participants to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members study the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Team members come from corporations, small businesses, community organizations, medical and educational facilities, government offices, and nonprofit agencies.

Over the years, District 2450 has been active in the GSE program. This year, it is pairing with two districts in the U.S. - 7680 in North Carolina and 5890 in Texas. Each GSE team will spend one month in the host district to visit local businesses, governmental offices, historical and cultural sites and will attend their district conferences. Teams from North Carolina and Texas will visit Cairo, Alexandria and Hurghada. District 2450 includes nine countries - Armenia, Ba'hrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, UAE - on three continents and club members speak several languages.

Bill Burnham, president-elect of the Mecklenburg County-South Rotary Club, will lead the District 7680 to Egypt April 28 through May 27. Team members are:
